Over the past few decades many technologies have moved to silicon platforms. Vacuum tubes, power electronics, photographic film & CD/DVDbased storage are a few examples. This transition is driven by silicon’s technological and industrial leverage that delivers rapidly improving performance and additional features while simultaneously reducing cost. This leverage is now working to transition quartz to silicon.
