Test Equipment Critical for Successful Kidney Dialysis Devices

Q: How are supply partners to medical device OEMs aiding in ensuring patient safety with home healthcare devices?

Most people know that a major function of the kidneys is to remove waste products and excess fluid from the body. These waste products and excess fluid are removed through the urine.

When the kidneys become damaged or diseased, it becomes imperative for the patient to receive hemodialysis to clean the excess fluid and toxins out of their body. In hemodialysis, blood is removed from the body and run through a machine known as a dialyzer and then returned to the body. To do this, the patient must have an access port.

If the kidney failure is gradual, a surgical fistula is created to allow the patient to interface with the dialyzer that will clean the blood. However, when the kidney failure is more sudden or while waiting for the fistula to mature, a central venous catheter is inserted into the body that allows two ports to interface with the dialyzer—one for supply and one for return.

Long before the patient ever brings home a central line catheter or a home dialyzer, Uson has been working behind the scenes with the suppliers and creators of these lifesaving products to ensure product safety.

While Uson does not make the various catheters, tubing sets, valves, and connectors used in dialysis, we do provide the product leak and occlusion testing that lets these OEM manufacturers help prolong and add to quality of life for these patients waiting for a kidney transplant.
