Health insurer Humana Inc. spent $248,000 lobbying the federal government in the first quarter of 2010 on health care reform and several other acts.

The Louisville, Ky., insurer also lobbied to encourage programs of health promotion or disease prevention, to provide premium discounts for healthy behavior and on the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission Reform Act of 2009.

Humana also lobbied on Tricare provisions in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010, according to a lobbying report filed with the House of Representatives.

The insurer sells commercial health insurance and Medicare Advantage plans. It also administers Medicaid coverage and provides coverage through the military's Tricare program.

Besides Congress and the White House, Humana lobbied the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Department of Defense in the January-March period.

Jill Canino, a former professional staff member of the Senate Aging Committee, was among those lobbying on the company's behalf.
