ProThera Biologics LLC
Location: East Providence, R.I.
Top executive: Yow-Pin Lim, president and chief scientific officer
Biomedical start-up ProThera Biologics LLC was established in Rhode Island in 2001 by Brown Medical School researchers Yow-Pin Lim and Douglas C. Hixson. The company is working in three general areas: the treatment of sepsis (whole-body inflammation), dengue and anthrax. The company has received $6.5 million in grants, and is looking for private investment for clinical trials. Its technology centers on a protein in the blood that regulates the immune system and is the key to controlling sepsis.
From the top, president Yow-Pin lim: “Inflammation is the real culprit. The bacteria is the trigger, but the bigger problem is the massive inflammation that can follow, causing organ failure and ultimately death. What’s unique about our approach is that we look to treat both the cause and the resulting inflammation at the same time.”
