Community Health buys 4 hospitals in Ohio, W. Va.

Community Health Systems Inc. said Friday it acquired a hospital system based in Youngstown, Ohio, and a hospital in West Virginia.

The hospital operator said it paid $120 million for Forum Health hospital system in a bankruptcy auction and also assumed an undisclosed amount of liabilities. Forum Health runs Trumbull Memorial Hospital and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital in Warren, and Northside Medical Center in Youngstown. Trumbull has 346 beds, while Hillside has 69 and Northside has 398.

Forum Health filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2009.

Bluefield Regional Medical Center in West Virginia has a capacity of 265 beds. Community Health Systems said it offers inpatient and outpatient health services in southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia.

Community Health Systems, which runs 126 hospitals in 29 states, is the largest publicly traded hospital operator in the U.S. Its shares fell 38 cents to $30.59.
