Medtronic Inc. said Monday that Chairman and CEO William A. Hawkins plans to retire in April and the medical device maker is currently searching for a replacement.

Hawkins, 56, will retire at the end of the company's fiscal year on April 29. But, the company said, he will remain until a successor is named.

Hawkins was elected CEO in August of 2007 and chairman in 2008. He has been with Medtronic since 2002.

Medtronic makes a range of heart devices, including implantable defibrillators. It also makes medical devices used for spinal surgery, along with devices used to treat pain.
