More than a decade ago, the British medical journal The Lancet published an article by researcher Andrew Wakefield that purported to show a clear connection between the measels-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine that had been in use for decades and the growth in the number of autism cases. When no other researchers could replicate Wakefield’s findings, a number of investigations began, which ultimately ended with The Lancet retracting the article and, most recently, with a claim in the British Journal of Medicine that Wakefield aimed to profit off the fraudulent report.

However, many local researchers and health officials say that retraction comes a decade late, and serious damage has been done to a whole generation of young people.
