Japanese medical-equipment manufacturer Terumo Corp. says it will buy U.S. company CaridianBCT for $2.63 billion.

Terumo said it plans to close the deal by May of this year.

The Japanese firm said the deal, announced Monday, will make it the largest company by sales in the global blood transfusion industry.

CaridianBCT is a privately-owned firm based in Colorado. The company makes medical devices such as automated blood-collection machines.

Japanese firms have recently taken advantage of the strong yen to acquire companies abroad.

Last month, Fujifilm Corp. said it will buy Merck & Co.'s biomanufacturing network for an undisclosed amount.
