Waltham-based life sciences and environmental tech giant PerkinElmer Inc. plans to acquire life sciences software firm CambridgeSoft Corp., and has already completed the purchase of ArtusLabs Inc. of Durham, N.C., paying a combined $220 million for the companies.

Cambridge-based CambridgeSoft develops and markets software aimed at improving productivity for the pharmaceutical, biotech, chemical and scientific research sectors. It develops its Chem & Bio Office programs in cloud computing, entreprise, workgroup and desktop versions. ArtusLabs offers a similar product, the Ensemble scientific knowledge platform, which is geared toward accelerating research and development in the pharmaceutical, chemical, petrochemical and similar industries.
