Healthways Inc., which operates wellness programs, announced Tuesday that John Ballantine, a director of the company since 2003, has been elected chairman of the board.
He replaces Thomas Cigarran, a founder of the company and chairman since 1988, who chose not to seek re-election but will continue as a board member, the company said.
Ballantine has been a member of the board's compensation committee and its nominating and corporate governance committee and leads its audit committee. He previously was executive vice president and chief risk management officer of First Chicago NBD Corp.
Ballantine's appointment follows management changes. In March, CEO Ben Leedle Jr. assumed the additional title of president for a second time, and Stefen Brueckner, who was president and chief operating officer, moved to an advisory position.
The company's programs focus on fitness, weight management, alternative medicine, smoking cessation and helping patients with chronic conditions maintain medication regimens.
Healthways, based in Nashville, shares rose 11 cents to $16.24 in midday trading Tuesday.
