THE BREAKUP: Walgreen Co. said Tuesday it will stop filling prescriptions handled by Express Scripts Inc., one of the largest U.S. pharmacy benefits management companies, on Jan. 1.
THE ARGUMENT: Walgreen said Express Scripts wants to cut the amount it pays Walgreen to fill prescriptions and wants too much control over other aspects of their relationship.
THE RERUN?: If Walgreen doesn't reach a new deal with Express Scripts, it could give up $5.3 billion in annual revenue. Walgreen reached a similar impasse with CVS Caremark Corp. last year, but the companies eventually settled their differences.
