At last night’s Tech, Drugs and Rock & Roll annual networking event, Boston University named School of Medicine associate professor Avrum Spira the university’s 2011 Innovator of the Year.

Spira was honored for his research on lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and the effects of smoking on airway epithelial cell-gene expression. According to a release from BU, Spira’s work has led to “the formation of companies that benefit society at large.” Among those are Allegro Diagnostics Inc. of Maynard, which Spira co-founded with BU colleague Jerome Brody in 2006.
