MIT is reporting that researchers at the school have developed an inexpensive, handheld device designed to detect cataracts.

The device, which acts like radar, can clip onto a smartphone or other device, such as an Apple Inc. iPad. Current technology for cataract detection is a $5,000 piece of equipment known as a slit lamp, and is used in an opthamologist’s office.
