SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A family in Puerto Rico is suing U.S. drug and medical device maker Baxter International Inc., claiming the company discharged dangerously contaminated waste onto their property.

Members of the Serracante family say they leased property to Baxter for use as a warehouse for a company plant in the mountain town of Aibonito. The family claims that when they got the property back they realized it was contaminated with radioactive Cobalt 60 and other potentially hazardous materials. The family seeks $50 million in damages. A lawyer for the Serracantes says the contamination has made the 12-acre (five-hectare) parcel unusable.

Baxter denies the allegations in court papers but the company did not immediately respond to a request for further comment Monday.
