Hospital operator Community Health Systems Inc. said Wednesday that it ended a bid for a 26-bed hospital in Roswell, New Mexico, after the Federal Trade Commission said it would continue reviewing the transaction beyond the timeline planned for closing the deal.

The Franklin, Tenn., company's purchase of Roswell Regional Hospital would have reduced the Roswell market from two competing hospitals to a single network. A Community Health subsidiary owns the 162-bed Eastern New Mexico Medical Center, also located in Roswell.

Community Health owns, leases or operates 133 hospitals in 29 states.
