Walgreen Chicago flagship to sell sushi, fine wine
Walgreens is opening a two-story flagship store in Chicago's Loop that aims to revamp the drugstore chain's image. The store will feature manicures, a cigar humidor, sushi and a barista preparing coffee drinks.
The store opens to customers Tuesday at the corner of State and Randolph. It'll sell fine wines, fresh bakery goods and made-to-order smoothies.
Deerfield-based Walgreen Co. is catering to upmarket customers to increase sales beyond the pharmacy. The nation's largest drugstore chain anticipates losing prescription drug sales after a split with St. Louis-based Express Scripts Inc. pharmacy network. Walgreen has said losing that contract will hurt its sales and earnings in fiscal 2012.
The new Walgreen store also revamps its pharmacy with an "Ask Your Pharmacist" desk, consultation rooms and a space to host community health events.
