Interoperability solution delivers CCD via innovative 'EHR-lite' app, enabling Pennsylvania health system to better connect patients and providers throughout its community
PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb 14, 2012-- dbMotion, an innovative provider of connected healthcare solutions, released information today about how its semantic interoperability platform delivers continuity of care documents (CCD) as a vital component of a ground-breaking iPad(R) application developed by Heritage Valley Health System.
Heritage Valley, a progressive community-based healthcare organization located in southwestern Pennsylvania, developed the iPad application iCAP (internet Clinical Access Portal) to better equip providers across its extensive network with comprehensive information about patients they serve. The dbMotion(TM) Solution organizes and harmonizes data captured and stored in disparate health information technologies. It delivers the CCD to Heritage Valley providers so it can be used in a meaningful way.
In addition to making the app available within the health system, Heritage Valley is expanding its mobile access strategy to ClinicalConnect, the region's first health information exchange. The HIE, composed of eight community health systems and UPMC, is being implemented over the next two years, beginning with a pilot program at Heritage Valley.
Apple's iPad device is rapidly becoming the mobile technology of choice for healthcare providers. Thirty percent of US physicians owned an iPad in May 2011 (just over a year after it was launched), according to a survey of more than 2,000 doctors released by Manhattan Research, and an additional 28 percent planned to purchase one within the following six months.
"Physicians have embraced the iPad technology-not only in their personal lives, but in professional settings as well," says David Carleton, vice president and chief information officer of Heritage Valley. "It is portable and easy to use, and allows clinicians to access information when and where they need it. Our application, developed with the support of Athena Advanced Technologies, Inc. is designed to enhance medical decision making, while improving access and quality of care. It's an exciting step into the future." The Heritage Valley iPad application was introduced in March 2011 and is being used by more than 250 of the health system's providers. The solution is used at every point of the continuum of care including physician offices, clinics, long-term care and hospitals. Whether at home or traveling, physicians have 15+ years of historic and real-time data available for clinical decision making and patient care.
"Heritage Valley has long been at the forefront of quality healthcare delivery," notes Peter McClennen, president of dbMotion North America, "and we are delighted that the dbMotion platform is playing such an integral role in making this visionary advancement a reality. Superior care is dependent upon access to superior information. The Heritage Valley iPad application is a creative and practical solution to this challenge." Carleton and other members of the Heritage Valley leadership team will be present at dbMotion's booth at HIMSS 2012 (booth ?4219) to demonstrate and discuss its use of the iPad application.
