MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb 27, 2012-- Restoration Robotics, Inc., a privately-held medical device company, today announced that its revolutionary ARTAS(TM) System has received a Canadian Medical Device License and can now be marketed and sold within Canada. The physician controlled ARTAS(TM) System allows them to quickly identify and harvest healthy follicular units directly from the patient's scalp during hair transplantation. Through its design and ease-of-use, the ARTAS(TM) System will enable physicians to offer this minimally invasive hair procedure to their patients.
"The ARTAS(TM) System is quickly being embraced by top hair restoration surgeons and their patients in the United States and we are now excited to offer this state-of-the-art technology in Canada," said Jim McCollum, Chief Executive Officer, Restoration Robotics.
The ARTAS(TM) System uses image guided technology and precision robotics to help deliver safe, consistent and natural looking results for patients. The system was developed in partnership with several leading hair restoration surgeons and has already received 510K clearance from the FDA.
"Many patients are seeking less invasive alternatives to the current hair restoration techniques," said Miguel Canales, MD, Medical Director at Restoration Robotics. "There is a growing interest in the ARTAS procedure because of its many patient benefits, such as less discomfort and a quicker return to normal activities." Hair Loss By The Numbers According to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS)1, at least 35 million men in the United States are affected by male pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia. By age 50, approximately 50% of men will experience some degree of appreciable hair loss.
Hair transplantation moves healthy, functioning follicles to the areas of the patient's scalp most impacted by baldness for more dramatic results. New hair continues to grow over the course of a full year, resulting in a gradual change in the patient's appearance over time.
Hair transplantation is the only permanent solution for hair loss.
