LOGAN, Utah--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Apr 4, 2012-- FlexFix, LLC, a VentureMD portfolio company, announces that it has recently been granted two new patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office which are fundamental patents in the orthopedic fracture fixation space.
FlexFix is an early stage medical device company focused on commercializing minimally invasive solutions for treating bone fractures and providing bone stabilization. The company is pleased to announce that the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office recently issued U.S. Patents 8,128,626 and 8,147,492 assigned to FlexFix. These are foundational patents that cover various aspects of a polymer-based intramedullary implant for fracture fixation. The implant is able to transition from its naturally rigid state to a flexible state for insertion and back to a rigid state for fixation. The patents cover, among other aspects, rigid-to-flexible-to-rigid fracture fixation, composite structures, deforming instruments used to change the shape of the implant, methods of implantation, and guide wire arrangements.
"The FlexFix Freedom Nail presents an opportunity to have the advantages of minimally invasive techniques with length stable fixation but without the problems seen by rigid nails. By introducing an initially flexible nail that then becomes rigid in the bone, the surgeon can now use off axis entry points to fix long bone fractures.
For example, in the humerus, these entry points can avoid the problems of rotator cuff pain with antegrade insertion and entry point fracture with retrograde insertion. Moreover, the nail is fully removable after the fracture is healed or if there is a problem with infection. I am very excited about the advantages that the Freedom Nail may provide." according to Amir Matityahu, M.D., Director of Pelvic and Acetabular Trauma and Reconstruction Orthopaedic Trauma Institute at San Francisco General Hospital, UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
"We are please with this significant milestone in the development of our patent portfolio," stated Wade Fallin, CEO of FlexFix. "The proprietary technology protected by the broad claims in these two issued patents has the potential to drive increased adoption by surgeons of percutaneous fracture fixation techniques in the over $5 billion orthopedic trauma market." About FlexFix FlexFix is a privately held, early stage medical device company that is dedicated to advancing minimally invasive solutions for treating bone fractures and providing bone stabilization.
