Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (NYSE: VAR), the leading manufacturer of medical devices for treating cancer, will exhibit the company's advanced technologies for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery at the International Technical Exhibition of Medical Imaging (ITEM) 2012, taking place here later this week. Varian will also co-sponsor a luncheon seminar on real-time 4-D radiotherapy, an approach that uses imaging and tracking technology for precisely targeting tumors that move as the patient breathes during a radiotherapy treatment.

Varian's booth at the ITEM exhibition will incorporate displays about the company's products, including: -- The TrueBeamT medical linear accelerator for treating cancer patients with advanced forms of radiotherapy and radiosurgery that combine precision and speed in order to decrease the amount of time required for treatments and enable clinicians to treat more patients.

-- RapidArc@ radiotherapy, which makes it possible to deliver precise treatments very quickly, in just a few minutes per treatment.

-- EclipseT treatment planning software, which is used to fulfill doctors' prescriptions for delivering dose to tumors with minimal exposure of surrounding healthy tissue.

-- ARIA@ oncology information system, a sophisticated information management program that streamlines clinical processes, improves workflow, eliminates paper charts, and automates many aspects of managing complex radiotherapy treatments.

-- Varian's full range of X-ray tubes for fluoroscopy, angiography, cardiology and cone-beam CT imaging as well as the company's PaxScan@ line of flat-panel digital X-ray image detectors, which are used for filmless imaging in medical, dental, and other applications.  Varian's new technically advanced X-ray tubes and flat panel detectors were developed to work together to improve image quality, increase throughput, and reduce the overall cost per procedure.

"Real-Time 4-D Radiotherapy" Symposium Varian will also sponsor a luncheon symposium on the topic of real-time 4-D radiotherapy, as part of the 71st Annual Meeting of the Japan Radiological Society (JRS), which meets during the ITEM exhibition event.  Hiroki Shirato, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Radiation Medicine at the Hokkaido University Graduate School of Medicine, an internationally-known expert in the management of tumor motion, will talk about compensating for tumor motion during radiotherapy in order to treat lung and other thoracic tumors more precisely.

The International Technical Exhibition of Medical Imaging 2012 will be held from April 13-15  at the Pacifico Yokohama Exhibition Hall.  This comprehensive academic exhibition, managed by the Japan Industries Association of Radiological Systems (JIRA), has been held annually since 1988, in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the Japan Radiological Society (JRS), the Annual Scientific Congress of the Japanese Society of Radiological Technology (JSRT), and the Scientific Congress of the Japan Society of Medical Physics (JSMP).
