Ethicon Endo-Surgery Honored for Energy Innovations by the Prestigious International Design Society
CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ethicon Endo-Surgery (EES) today announced the receipt of two International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) from the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA): A Silver IDEA and a Bronze IDEA. Two EES products were also named as finalists in this year’s awards program.

The IDSA recognized these Ethicon Endo-Surgery innovations:
The ENSEAL® G2 Super Jaw and the ENSEAL® G2 Curved and Straight Tissue Sealers received a Silver IDEA in the category of Medical and Scientific Products. The sealers, designed for colorectal, gynecology, urology, thoracic and general surgery, provide sterile, single-patient-use surgical instruments for coagulating and transecting vessels.
The EES GENERATOR User Experience received a Bronze IDEA in the category of Digital Design. The interface was designed to meet the unique needs of every member of the surgical staff. The large, capacitive touch screen offers vivid, relevant, and instructive information that make it easy for nurses to set-up and troubleshoot the device. Simple touch screen design and audio alerts give surgeons meaningful feedback and make the device more intuitive to operate.
The EES GENERATOR was also named an IDEA finalist in the category of Medical and Scientific Products. The operating room system includes a generator, cart and footswitch. The system combines advanced technology, multifunctionality, an intuitive touch-screen and an IDEA-winning user interface in one compact, mobile, easy-to-operate unit. As the first of its kind integrated advanced energy platform, the EES GENERATOR combines both ultrasonic and advanced bipolar devices, increasing accessibility of options for the user.
The ECHELON FLEX™ Powered ENDOPATH® Stapler was chosen as an IDEA finalist in the category of Medical and Scientific Products. It is the first powered endocutter with enhanced system-wide compression and stability, which offers surgeons greater control in laparoscopic surgery. The stapler is a sterile, single-patient-use articulating surgical instrument that simultaneously cuts and staples tissue. It can be used in a variety of minimally invasive procedures, including bariatric, colorectal, general, gynecologic, thoracic and urologic.
Winners and finalists will be featured in the IDEA 2012 online gallery, in the fall edition of IDSA’s Innovation yearbook, as well as through various design media outlets. Winning designs will be added to the permanent collection at The Henry Ford museum to share and preserve the story of American innovation.
