Sony DADC BioSciences to Develop Smart Consumables for Next Generation of Sony Cell Sorting Instrumentation System

Tue, 07/03/2012 - 3:10pm

SALZBURG, Austria--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sony DADC BioSciences today announced a collaboration with Sony Medical Business Unit (MBU) to develop and manufacture smart consumables for Sony’s new generation of advanced cell sorting instrumentation system SH800, which was launched last week at the Cyto (June, 23rd – 27th, Leipzig, Germany).

“We are delighted to enter this collaboration, particularly since we were chosen purely on our technical and commercial merits in strong competition from other OEM manufacturers. The project presented significant technical challenges regarding redesign and precision including manufacturing to ISO 13485 standard.”

Cell sorters enable cell analysis as well as targeted isolation of cells for further analysis. Sony MBU is already well established in the cytometry through its acquisition of iCyt. The new cell sorting chip made by Sony DADC will replace the conventional flow cell in the SH800 and allow quick and easy changeover of that optical component on a daily basis.

Sony DADC is an independent subsidiary of Sony Corporation providing OEM services to life science companies worldwide. Dr Christoph Mauracher, Head of Sony DADC BioSciences, stresses the fact that this was the first manufacturing project with Sony MBU Japan: “We are delighted to enter this collaboration, particularly since we were chosen purely on our technical and commercial merits in strong competition from other OEM manufacturers. The project presented significant technical challenges regarding redesign and precision including manufacturing to ISO 13485 standard.”
