Orthocare Innovations’ Microprocessor Foot Ankle System Named to R&D 100
Orthocare Innovations continues receiving critical acclaim as its Magellan™ microprocessor foot ankle system has been named one of the Top 100 technologically significant products introduced into the marketplace over the past year. In selecting Orthocare Innovations for its R&D Top 100 Awards, R&D Magazine placed it in elite company that includes this year’s winners such as Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Toyota.
Apple also recently selected Magellan for highlighting in a long-form video titled “Making a Difference. One App at a Time.” The video shows how Magellan was created and how it’s changed the life of Paralympian Oksana Masters.
Magellan brings a novel approach to lower limb prosthetics by mimicking key features of the human ankle that are essential to normal gait. Magellan offers active ankle function using microprocessor computer control combined with advanced, micro-hydraulic technology. This provides persons who have lost limbs with enhanced efficiency, stability and comfort.
A key innovative feature is Magellan's connectivity, linking the device to its user and the user's health care providers. This functionality, afforded by iPhone and iPad apps and Bluetooth technology, enables patients to make adjustments to the Magellan themselves, such as adaptations to account for changes in footwear. This functionality also extends to health care providers, affording access to patient performance and device diagnostics.

In the past year Orthocare’s Magellan has also received the additional honors and acclaim:
- The Edison Awards™ recognized it with its top award in the Science and Medicine–Assistive Device category;
- It was named a "Fierce 15" by FierceMedicalDevices; and
- CTIA—The Wireless Association selected Magellan to feature in a national TV ad and website
Since 1963, the R&D 100 Awards have identified revolutionary technologies newly introduced to the market. Winners of the R&D 100 Awards are selected by an independent judging panel and the editors of R&D Magazine. The publication and its online portal serve research scientists, engineers and other technical staff members at high-tech industrial companies and public and private laboratories around the world.
