The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and the Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA) are pleased to announce a new partnership and grant opportunity.

The Colon Cancer Alliance-AACR Fellowship for Biomarker Research is open to postdoctoral and clinical research fellows wanting to conduct colorectal cancer research that focuses on identifying, developing, or validating biological markers. The research proposed by applicants can be basic, translational, clinical, or epidemiological in nature and must have direct applicability and relevance to colorectal cancer.

“The AACR is delighted to be collaborating with the Colon Cancer Alliance to provide a new fellowship opportunity to promising young investigators who have strong potential to become successful, independent cancer researchers,” said Margaret Foti, Ph.D., M.D. (h.c.), chief executive officer of the AACR. “We know that more than 140,000 people in the United States alone will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer this year, and this new fellowship program will help to foster new research and accelerate progress against this common cancer.”

“Biomarker research is critical,” said Jasmine Greenamyer, chief executive officer of the Colon Cancer Alliance. “These genetic indicators are the key to unlocking more personalized care, leading to more effective and efficient treatment plans and ultimately saving more lives. It’s essential that we move the dial forward in biomarker research, and we’re proud to partner with the AACR to help make that happen.”

The fellowship is part of the Colon Cancer Alliance’s inaugural Blue Hope Research Award and will provide $50,000 to the winner of the fellowship over the one-year term, beginning on July 1, 2014. The recipient will formally accept the grant at the AACR Annual Meeting 2014, held April 5-9, in San Diego, Calif.
