Micromachining of Metals Cheaper and Faster with New Laser Technology
July 11, 2012 1:54 pm | by Dr. Geoff Shannon | Miyachi Unitek Corp. | Articles | CommentsIt is a fact of life that components are getting smaller and smaller, especially in the medical, automotive, and electronics markets. New micromachining technology, including advanced laser markers with superior beam quality, is being used to achieve results similar to traditional machining technologies, but cheaper, faster, and more flexibly. The fiber marker technology can be two to three times less expensive than standard technology.

July 2, 2012 9:39 am | by Dr. Geoff Shannon | Miyachi Unitek Corp. | Articles | CommentsSeam sealing is the process that permanently bonds the package and lid of a device, providing a barrier for the internal components for the device’s operational lifetime. This is typically the last critical step in the package manufacturing process, so it is among the most important. The completed product performs a vital function and has a high dollar value, so creating a barrier to contamination ingress is essential. The stakes are high – optoelectronic packages for fiber optic cables transmitting signals sometimes in the middle of the ocean must last for a very long time since replacement is difficult and costly. Similarly, aerospace RF/microwave packages perform essential functions, making it imperative to prevent external environmental conditions from penetrating the package, even in extremely aggressive environments.

June 5, 2012 6:44 am | by Tim Ruffner | Articles | CommentsConformal cooling in tool design is a concept that’s fundamentally sound. The trouble lies in the mechanics. Design obstacles imposed by performance boundaries in available machining processes often put its merits out of practical reach. The emergence and attainability of DMLS technology gives toolmakers the design latitude to make conformal cooling a profitable reality.
