Wire 100 Times Thinner than a Human Hair

Wire as thin as 0.6 µm is readily available from stock from Goodfellow in lengths ranging from a fraction of a meter to large production runs. Ideal for use in microfabricated devices such as integrated circuits, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), solar cells and thermal probes for biomedical applications, ultra-thin wire is generating increased interest among researchers and design engineers who seek to develop smaller and smaller devices.

The 0.6µm wire is 99.9% pure platinum and is supplied as Wollaston wire. The Wollaston process calls for platinum wire of a known diameter to be embedded in the middle of a silver wire having a very specific, considerably larger diameter. This “composite” wire is then drawn until the silver wire is the correct diameter to yield the desired diameter of the internal platinum wire. For most end-uses, the silver coating is dissolved with acid, leaving the platinum wire intact and ready for use.
