The Pulse: Smelling Salmonella & Biomedical Experiments in Space

This week on The Pulse, we are designing medical devices for space, diagnosing the undiagnosable, reconstructing vessels in 3D, and smelling salmonella so we don’t get sick. This episode features:

  • Biomedical Experiments Held at Space Station: The NASA International Space Station National Laboratory office, and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space have joined forces to design a bone densitometer.
  • Diagnosing the Undiagnosable: 350 million people worldwide are affected by rare or undiagnosed diseases, and whole-genome sequencing and interpretation tools have the potential to provide them with answers.
  • 3D Vessel Reconstruction: The ILUMIEN OPTIS from St. Jude Medical offers a new perspective on coronary arteries, and has recently received FDA approval for launch. 
  • Smelling Salmonella: Foodborne illnesses makes 1 in 6 Americans - or 48 million people - sick each year. It spreads easily, and is difficult to control, so quick detection is critical in halting its spread.
