One example where miniaturization of medical devices and motion solutions is really making an impact is with portable and home devices. With a rising demand for battery powered portable equipment, such as medical respirators and pumps, battery life is critical to the success of the product. Advancements in the design of motors, including DC, brushless DC, and stepper, give design engineers the capability to push the envelope for motor performance.

These high power density motors are beneficial for these types of applications because they offer increased torque in a smaller package size. This enables smaller motors to be used in order to reduce the overall package size and weight of the product. Higher power density leads to a motor efficiency increase as well. Patient comfort is increased by lighter devices that are able to run longer before battery changes/charges are needed. Another advantage is the extension of the lifetime of the motor, allowing the patient to continue using the same device for a longer period of time.
