Health insurer Humana Inc. on Thursday named long-standing CEO Michael B. McCallister as chairman, succeeding David A. Jones Jr. who has resigned from the post but will remain on the board.
The Louisville, Ky., company did not say why Jones chose to step down. Jones is founder and managing director of venture capital firm Chrysalis Ventures.
Humana is the fifth-largest publicly traded health insurer based on enrollment. McCallister has served as the company's CEO since 2000, longer than the leaders of other major insurers like WellPoint Inc., UnitedHealth Group Inc. or Cigna Corp.
Humana's board also created the position of lead independent director and named Kurt J. Hilzinger to serve in that role until April 2012.
