Medical device maker St. Jude Medical Inc. said Thursday it received regulatory approval in Japan for its Eon Mini spinal cord stimulation system.

The company said the device is the "world's smallest, longest-lasting" rechargeable neurostimulator. The devices are used to manage chronic pain of the trunk or limbs and pain from failed back surgery by delivering mild electrical pulses to the spinal cord.

It is already approved in the U.S.

Shares of St. Jude Medical fell 1 cent to $39.25 in afternoon trading.
