Candidates for Governor of Massachsuetts responded to the hostile takeover bid by French pharmaceutical company Sanofi-aventis for Genzyme Corp. The Cambridge-based biotechnology company has urged shareholders not to act on the tender offer from Sanofi, which is worth $69 per share.
When asked how the state can continue to grow jobs in the life sciences, given the global nature of the industry, Gov. Deval Patrick said, “It’s a global market and we should play in it. I have been in regular touch with both companies and, by the way, was in touch with the foreign company before they expressed interest in the local company, because they’ve expanded their footprint in the state.“ Patrick said that the state continues to market the industry at home and abroad, and that it’s making a difference. But, he said, it won’t happen by talking alone but by investing in education, innovation and instrastructure.
