The University of Massachusetts Amherst and PolyMedix Inc., a Pennsylvania biotechnology firm, have received a Phase 2 Small Business Technology Transfer $750,000 contract from the U.S. Army Research Office for more tests on antimicrobial compounds.

In its Phase 1 contract, Polymedix identified antimicrobial compounds for the treatment of multi-drug resistant biofilm-embedded bacteria. According to a news release today about the contract, biofilms enable bacteria to survive and thrive, which can make treatment problematic given the resistance to antibiotics.
