A Chinese institute with ties to Cambridge researchers has joined the Earth Microbiome Project (EMP), a global effort to determine the functional and evolutionary diversity of microbial communities on the planet.

BGI, formerly known as Beijing Genomics Institute, of Shenzhen, China, will be responsible for leading the effort to identify sample collections in Asia that can be leveraged against the EMP. BGI also said it will provide DNA extraction, amplification, sequence library construction and sequencing for metagenomics projects and bioinformatics infrastructure.
