Single-incision gall bladder surgery, where a surgeon gains laparoscopic access to the gall bladder through an incision in the belly button, appears just as safe and effective as traditional laparoscopic procedures, according to interim data released by Covidien plc at the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons meeting in San Antonio.

Covidien said that gall bladder removal using its SILS Port also led to superior cosmetic outcomes due to the lack of multiple abdominal incisions.
