CDRH OSEL Recruitment for ORISE

The Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories (OSEL) is the laboratory of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) of the Food and Drug Administration.

OSEL performs product testing; develops reliable standardized test methods for CDRH and industry use; performs anticipatory scientific investigations on emerging technologies; contributes laboratory data to national and international standards used in CDRH decision making; provides scientific and technical training for CDRH staff members; and maintains laboratory collaborations and relationships with scientific researchers in academia and other Federal laboratories. OSEL also coordinates and oversees CDRH’s activities that support the development of national and international standards.

POSITION TITLE: Post-doctoral researcher

SALARY RANGE: $60,000 to $70,00 (depending on qualifications)

POSITION INFORMATION:  Post-doctoral researcher in Polymer Chemistry

Division: DCMS

Project Description: The candidate would be part of a collaborative team in the Division of Chemistry and Materials Science (DCMS), in the Office of Science and Engineering Labs (OSEL), at the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) at the Food and Drug Administration. The team objectives are to develop scientific understanding and test methods related to degradation mechanism of polymers and the impact of known sex-based physiological differences on the molecular mechanisms of degradation in polymeric systems. The candidate in DCMS will synthesize target polymers for degradation studies and fabricate different material systems that emulate the various components of diseased coronary arteries. The candidate will quantify the fundamental parameters that describe the polymer degradation processes by implementing multiple analytical tools such as Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometer (LCMS) and Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC). The position is for one year with the possibility of extension to a second year depeding on performance and available funding.

Qualifications: We are seeking an experienced (PhD preferred) interdisciplinary scientist with a background in the areas polymer chemistry or materials science, with laboratory experience in polymer synthesis and Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LCMS).
