Surgical oncologist Robert L. DeWitty Jr., M.D. performed a total mastectomy at Providence Hospital, Washington, D.C. with the Canady Vieira Hybrid Plasma Scalpel on March 8, 2012. The procedure, normally lasting around one hour, took 32 minutes with virtually no blood loss. "There was no need to administer epinephrine," said Dr. DeWitty, referring to the drug that is used to control bleeding. The Canady Vieira Hybrid Plasma Scalpel cut the tissue and sealed the blood vessels as it cuts eliminating the need for both a traditional scalpel blade or separate cauterizing tool. The revolutionary tool also "sealed the lymph system so that there was no need for drains in the patient following surgery," said Dr. DeWitty. The result: less surgery time and a much more comfortable postoperative period for the patient. Because the Canady Vieira Hybrid Plasma Scalpel design team included a surgeon, no special training is required. "The Canady Vieira Hybrid Plasma Scalpel felt just like a traditional stainless steel scalpel blade," said Dr. DeWitty. "Its one of the best inventions I have ever seen or used in surgery during my 40-year career."
Craig Thomas, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon and Director of Orthopedics at Providence Hospital, Washington D.C., performed twenty-two orthopedic procedures with the Canady Vieira Hybrid Plasma Scalpel during March 1 – March 21, 2012, including hip and knee arthroplasties with total hip and knee replacements as well as revisions of hip and knee with replacements. "The Canady Vieira Hybrid Plasma Scalpel is superior to the current electrosurgery products on the market," said Dr. Thomas. "Not only did it coagulate a specific area, but with its plasma beam, the Canady Vieira Hybrid Plasma Scalpel could 'spray' a larger area to coagulate a general area, which is needed in direct anterior hip replacements and knee replacements to stop oozing of the synovium."
Thomas also stated "When energized, the Canady Vieira Hybrid Plasma Scalpel cuts through skin, muscle and fascia while simultaneously coagulating, thereby reducing cellular damage. The significant reduction in blood loss limits the need for expensive blood transfusions and reduces swelling, rehabilitation times and ultimately hospital stay duration." The Canady Vieira Hybrid Plasma Scalpel Technology was co-developed by the research scientific plasma and surgical teams from US Patent Innovations, LLC and WEM Equipamentos, Ribeirão, Preto, São Paulo, Brazil. Co-inventors of the Hybrid Plasma Technology are Jerome Canady, M.D., Edson Vieira, Nicholas Vieira and Kimberly Wiley, M.D.
