Swiss drug maker Novartis AG (NYSE: NVS) has won approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a first of its kind flu vaccine that uses animal cell cultures, not eggs.

The company’s Vaccines and Diagnostics division is headquartered in Cambridge, Mass. and the design of the clinical program was coordinated in Cambridge, as was toxicology work and coordination with the US government, Novartis spokeswoman Elizabeth Power said.
