Paragonix Technologies Inc., Announces Publication by the ASAIO (American Society for Artificial Internal Organs) Journal of "Oxygen Consumption During Oxygenated Hypothermic Perfusion as a Measure of Donor Organ Viability"
Paragonix Technologies, Inc. today announced that the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO) Journal has published an original research paper describing the performance of a hypothermic perfusion platform for donor organ preservation and the ability to monitor donor organ viability. The study concludes that measurement of organ oxygen consumption during oxygenated hypothermic perfusion may have significant value in predicting post- preservation organ function.
Lisa M. Anderson, PhD, senior author for the paper, commented, “We are honored that the ASAIO journal, one of the world-leading publications in the field of organ research and development has elected to include our original research in the July 2013 issue. We are certain that this work will be of interest to organ transplant physicians world-wide. We look forward to future publications discussing the exceptional organ preservation and transportation characteristics of our organ transport platform, including the Sherpa Pak™ Cardiac Transport System and other products in its organ preservation pipeline.
The authors describe how hypothermic machine perfusion for the preservation of kidneys, may present the opportunity for assessing ex vivo parameters that may have value in predicting post-implantation organ viability. The study concludes that measurement of organ oxygen consumption during oxygenated hypothermic perfusion may have significant value in predicting post- preservation organ function.
Dr. Benedict Cosimi, Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Chief Emeritus, Transplantation Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital and co-author for the paper commented, “This is an exciting field of research. There is a great need for new technologies to better preserve donor organs.” Dr. Cosimi is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Paragonix. He is the Claude E. Welch Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Chief Emeritus of the Transplantation Unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Cosimi has served as the Past-President of the New England Surgical Society, President of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons as well as President of the 2006 World Transplantation Congress. He is also currently on the Scientific Advisory Boards for the American Liver Foundation, the Massachusetts Kidney Foundation, and several biotechnology research foundations.
Previous Announcements Paragonix previously announced on June 10, 2013, that the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT) accepted for presentation an abstract describing the performance of the Sherpa Pak™ Cardiac Transport System during the upcoming 16th Congress of the European Society for Organ Transplantation to be held in Vienna, Austria from the 8th - 11th September 2013.
