Microstream MicroPod brings OEM partners groundbreaking access to trusted capnography technology, making it compatible with existing patient monitoring systems
Covidien , a leading global provider of healthcare products and recognized innovator in patient monitoring and respiratory care devices, has launched the Microstream® MicroPod™ module. This is an important product for its Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) partners that will help hospitals improve patient safety by expanding access to capnography technology.
Capnography is a noninvasive method for monitoring carbon dioxide exhaled by patients. Leading patient care organizations throughout the world increasingly recommend capnography monitoring as the fastest method for detecting changes associated with ensuing respiratory failure. Capnography is used in numerous hospital applications, including post-operative opioid pain management, procedural sedation and critical care.
With the MicroPod module adding a new level of flexibility to Covidien’s line of OEM modules, OEM partners can now incorporate market-leading Microstream capnography in a wider variety of medical devices. Additionally, the MicroPod module’s external module configuration will help hospitals better manage their capital costs with a ‘plug-and-play’ solution that can be shared between multiple devices.
“The MicroPod module is a significant development for Covidien, but more importantly, for our partners, the hospitals they support, and patients who can benefit from our capnography solutions,” said Matthew Anderson, Vice President and General Manager, Respiratory and Monitoring Solutions, Covidien. “This technology will greatly expand access and use of a reliable patient monitoring technology available today. We believe the MicroPod module will ultimately contribute to greater patient safety in hospitals throughout the world.”
To address patient safety and clinical workflow, the MicroPod module contains Smart Capnography™ algorithms, including:
- Integrated Pulmonary IndexTM (IPI) combining four real-time respiratory measurements – capnography, respiratory rate, pulse rate and pulse oximetry – to provide clinicians with an integrated snapshot of a patient’s respiratory status
- Smart Alarm Respiratory Analysis (SARA™) alarm management technology that reduces insignificant respiratory alarms, thereby preserving clinician vigilance, which is essential to patient safety.
In addition, the MicroPod module can be used with Covidien’s unique, patented FilterLine® breath sampling lines. These sampling lines can effectively collect exhaled carbon dioxide from a patient’s mouth and nose while delivering supplemental oxygen. FilterLine sampling lines are further designed to handle moisture and humidity effectively, decreasing potential for obstructions that make it difficult to obtain accurate readings— a common problem with other capnography systems.
The MicroPod module is available immediately for OEM device integrations.
